A savory space for culinary creation

The Chopping Block has long provided a magical space for food lovers in Chicago to experience the art of cooking through classes, events and hand-picked cookware. Bringing a modernized flavor to their location in the historic Merchandise Mart, we revitalized their space with interior design that evokes all of the wonders of culinary creation.

Flavorful Aesthetics

We planned our transformation to allow for the space to remain open throughout the design process, working alongside founder and CEO Shelley Young to fully capture her vision for the kitchen classroom and retail area. Pulling inspiration from both the industrial chic aesthetic and the ambiance of a 1920s French bistro, we also embraced the love of textures, color and contrast we share with our client, while staying mindful of the functionality of each space.

Catering to Distinct Spaces

Working with the separate kitchen classroom and retail area, we embraced the opportunity to express our philosophy of design thinking to draw out the best in each of The Chopping Block’s offerings. An open floor plan keeps each space distinct, yet harmonious with one another. In the Chef’s Kitchen, professional-grade stainless steel appliances, an ornate backsplash, wood accents and on-hand storage solutions for pots and pans create a welcoming space for all manner of culinary adventures.

An Appetizing Environment

The retail area incorporates custom shelving displays to showcase products, cool and warm wood tones, stainless steel and copper. The addition of a wine bar transforms the space from a place to shop to a destination for a delicious evening. Like a time-tested recipe, every design element works together to build on and tell The Chopping Block story.

Retail Design Excellence

When the project was complete, we were honored to receive a first place Design Excellence Award in retail design from the American Society of Interior Designers. Our client was enchanted by the results, stating “we have spent years working together and they have patiently helped me understand my own vision and to work with me to bring it to life.” The finished space is nothing short of inspiring, evoking a sensory experience that is as appetizing to the eye as its creations are to your taste buds.
