A Home for Making Memories
When our client purchased a second property in Grand Beach, MI, they wanted a laid-back home away from the hustle and bustle of their primary residence in Chicago, IL. Collaborating closely with the family, we transformed the house into a home that reflects who they are and supports the family life they envisioned.
Building Up from Bare Bones
In the main living area of the home, a new open-concept layout created a harmonious connection between spaces, turning the ground level into the nucleus of the family home.
A Harmonious Living Space
To cultivate a sense of warmth and coziness where the family will gather, we added architectural ridge beams and rustic barnwood to the ceilings and updated the fireplace with shiplap. To surprise the client with a living room that truly got the heart of who they are as a family, we created a special nook reserved just for doing puzzles—their favorite way to spend time together.
Where the Family Gathers
The family wanted a sophisticated yet relaxed environment that would be comfortable for entertaining. The large custom island has elements of a laid-back farm table mixed with the dramatically curved legs, adding a bold contrast to the room.
A retreat for the parents
Our first step in designing a respite for our client was to turn the upstairs loft and balcony into a private bedroom suite. We gave the bathroom an update with a clean aesthetic and added cozy luxury to the bedroom with a double-sided fireplace skinned in water buffalo hide.
Just for the Kids
Creating this fun kids escape was a creative design challenge we were excited to delve into. With six beds in one room, there is plenty of space for the kids and their friends to play and have sleep overs. The bunk room is the kids’ special place where they’ll make memories that last a lifetime.
The Next Chapter
Working with the client to embrace true Michigan interior design and create their dream vacation home was a wonderful, collaborative experience. The family tells us they still feel delighted and surprised each time they find a new personalized detail they hadn’t noticed before. They love it so much, we’ve already started planning a back yard transformation to match.
